Haiku, in memory of BeOS.

Anyone here remember Be.Inc?  In the 1990’s it was going to be the greatest thing since the Amiga.  Flash-harry hardware, new media-centric operating system… wow, it was nice.  The company then decided to focus on the operating system BeOS, made a few releases to much acclaim, and then went broke if memory serves.  I had version 4.5 installed on a box for several months – it’s support for my videocapture card was unparalleled  at the time.
Fast-forward to today.  Haiku-OS – an Open Source re-imagining of BeOS, has just reached Alpha after 8 years.  It still has a little ways to go, but those fellas have done a masterful job.  The OS is designed for the desktop, I’d encourage people to try it (perhaps in a Virtual Machine first). It will prove to be the first and only time I’ll find myself saying this, but Conroy (the Australian Federal Government Minister for Communications (who would be a laughing stock, if he weren’t so scary – a man who has such a small handful of clues would hold onto them, don’t you think?)) has actually, possibly, done the Right Thing when he suggests splitting Telstra.

According to the ABC, the FedGov is going to attempt to force the Big T to ’separate its ownership of the phone network from the retail arm’. That ought to level the playing field a little more… at the very least I’ll enjoy watching…
